The REAL McKENZIES are a
Vancouver, BC-based Celtic punk band. Donning the
traditional (and sometimes not so traditional) Highland garb of kilts and
sporrans, the group proudly displays it's Scottish heritage. Songs
(or
masterpieces, as the group calls them) include "Scots Wha' Ha'e", "Thistle Boy", "Ceilidh", "Another Round", and "Sauny Bean Clan" (a ballad based on the true
story of Scotland's famous cannibal clan). In addition, interpretations of
traditional Scottish folk songs round out their extensive repertoire. These
include... "My Bonnie (Lies O'er The Ocean)", "Loch Lomond (High Road)", "O'er The Sea To Skye",
and "Wild Mountain Thyme".

At times, they
have been joined by special members of the "McKenzie Alumni",
such greats as... juno award winner Raven "Black Cloud" MacLeod,
Bad Religion's Jay Bentley, Bay City Roller Les McKeown, Anthony Walker of Art Bergman Band, Richard Priske of
Bif Naked & Matthew Good Band, even GROOVEMONGER bassist STUART MacNEIL has put in a tour of duty as BagPiper. One of the most memorable highlights of the REAL McKENZIES' career was a Robbie Burns day performance backed by world champions...
The SFU Pipe Band. Plus...
a vast list of great musicians too numerous to list.
Their present lineup offers a dual guitar assault of historic proportions, which usually ends in a guitar duel of historic proportions...

Formed in the mid 90's, for reasons, which to this day
defy explanation, The REAL McKENZIES have played over 3,000 gigs. Constant,
rigorous touring & an innate sense of always being in the right place at
the wrong time has lead the band to a near punch up with Christian Slater over
bagels & acting style on Fairfax Ave. in L.A., a close encounter with an
unknown flying aircraft near AREA 51 in Nevada, a beer drinking swirlee contest
with the Toilet Boys in New York New York, pub crawling in
San Francisco with Fat Mike,
a recent west coast tour with Flogging Molly that was so successful hardly anyone
can remember it, and a performance on the Mike Bullard Show (a Canadian late
night talk show host who was defiled by Tom Green with a dead beaver).
In 1995, IFA Records of Seattle gave The REAL McKENZIES
an unprecedented signing bonus in return for one evening's worth of unbridled
frivolity, to be captured and displayed in all of it's natural Celtic fury.
This, after being transformed by engineering genius Johnny Dunleavy (& the
consumption of 1/2 a case of Scotch Whiskey) became the curiously titled "Scotland".
Following this release the REAL McKENZIES
hit the road for 3 Canadian tours
and 2 U.S. tours. In March of '98 the band appeared for a Labbatts/Kokanee
blind date concert at Snow Valley Ski Resort near Edmonton. The summer of '98
saw the lads on the road as part of The Vans Warped Tour, sharing the stage
with such great bands as
Bad Religion, NOFX, Rancid, & many many more.
A new album, "Clash of the Tartans",
released by Joe Keithley's Sudden Death Records,
features guest appearances
by DOA's Brien O'Brien on drums, The Paperboys' Shannon Saunders
playing accordion and Allan "Raven" Macleod, on bagpipes. Sudden Death Records
is the brainchild of DOA's Joey "Shithead" Keithley.
He has taken his vast years of experience being ripped off, told off, and ignored,
and added a few new tricks of his own! The first video taken from Clash of the Tartans,
entitled "Mainland", proved to be a painful experience. The concept
of the video, shot & directed by Danny Nowak (Hardcore Logo, The Big Hit,
Flesh Gordon Meets The Cosmic Cheerleaders), has the guys marooned at sea, stranded
without an ounce of Scotch.
After spying a lone boat in the distance, the guys
launch an invasion of the craft, securing the ship as their own and rescuing/capturing
several damsels in distress!
With all of the fun &
fury of the last few years neatly tucked under their proverbial sporrans,
The REAL McKENZIES have embraced the new millennium with renewed vim and vigor
in the like that would make Robbie Burns himself proud to be mentioned in
verse and song.
You can find the 21st century Celtic bards gregariously preparing
for their next release with new skins on drums, new strings on guitars, sharpening
their wits & swords, and readying themselves for a new campaign of fun
& Celtic storm in a manor that would make their Scottish ancestors do
the highland fling with pride!
